Ways to Use Soapberries
How many ways can you use a soapberry anyway?
Soapberries have an incredible number of applications. We haven't yet quite put a number on how many ways there are to use a soapberry, but maybe you could help us. Below are some ideas to get you started. Try one...we are confident you will be pleased with the results. If you find another way email us your idea, and we will add it to the SoBerry Clean recommendations.
Soapberry Powder: Grind up 4 to 6 soapberries into a fine powder in a blender or coffee grinder, until it becomes a fine powder and then place in an airtight container. This powder can be used for your laundry or your dishwasher.
Soapberry Liquid: Follow the ratio of about 15 soapnuts per 6.5 cups of water. What you will want to do is boil the soapberries in the water for an hour. Cool the liquid, and then strain out the soapberry pieces. You want to store your liquid in a cool, dark place or refrigerate. As this liquid does not contain a preservative, it will store for 3 to 4 days. If you refrigerate it, it will last longer (remember this is a cleaning agent--if you have children be sure it is labeled in some way that indicates it is not for consumption). As time goes on, you will figure out exactly how much you will need. You can use the liquid for cleaning your laundry, or for any of the following applications.
Washing the Dishes: Put a tablespoon or two into your washbasin, and scrub those dishes clean. One enthusiastic customer shared that she had a rather unpleasant pot to clean one evening, so what she decided to do was take a soapberry and warm water and soak the pot overnight. She was very pleased to find that the soapberry and water soak had removed all the stuck on food and all she had to do was easily sponge clean the pot.
Cleaning the House: Put some of your homemade soapberry liquid into a spray bottle, and add water. Or, you could toss a few soapberries into a spray bottle, and add warm water. Again, this cleaner does not have any chemical preservatives, so make how much you will need for about four days. For a glass cleaner, add some vinegar at a ratio of 8 ounces of water, 1 3/4 tablespoons water, and either 13/4 tablespoons homemade soapberry liquid or 2 soapberries (if using soapberries use warm to hot water).
Jewelry: Take a couple of minutes to soak your jewelry in your homemade soapnuts liquid. Then, use a soft brush to remove any unwanted matter. After you rinse your jewelry with water, polish with a cloth and admire how it sparkles.
Washing the Floor: You can use some of your homemade soapberry liquid to wash the floor. Put a few drops on the floor, and mop as usual. Or, you can fill a bucket with warm water and some soapberries (about 5 or so) and let the saponin release into the water for about 5 minutes. Use this water to get your floors clean. The berries you have used will still be good for next time, so if you like dry them out and store them for future use.
Traveling: Bring some soapberries with you--and use them just as you would at home...
